Dying woman gets last wish to go outside from video game VR headset
A virtual reality headset has helped a grandmother fulfill her final wish to go outdoors without leaving her armchair.
Roberta Firstenberg, who is too weak to walk outside due to cancer, was able to achieve the impossible by using the Oculus Rift headset.
She was able to explore natural environments and even interact with butterflies.
Mrs Firstenberg’s granddaughter Priscilla, a Seattle-based video game artist, got in contact with the headset creators, Oculus, who immediately agreed to send her a development kit.
Priscilla and her friends began working on a demo to include all things her grandmother loved from waterfalls to forests and fairies.
She had been given the opportunity to use an early iteration of the technology but sadly Roberta died of cancer four weeks later before they were able to fully develop the experience.
The cutting-edge technology, used mostly for 3D gaming, has previously sparked controversy over claims it is the first step to making virtual communication a genuine replacement for meeting people in the flesh.
