Five Dead During Riot In Abuja

Recent reports from AIT, has revealed that five people have lost their lives in an ongoing riot caused by a motorcycle accident in Dei Dei, Abuja.
It was also reported that over 35 vehicles were destroyed in the incident. According to reports, an accident which involved a motorcycle running down a woman by the roadside is what sparked the riot. There was a heated conversation between onlookers and sympathizers which led to a fight between residents from around the area. To defend himself, the motorcyclist stabbed five people.
Angry residents in the area began fighting, smashing vehicles and burning houses. The chaos led to businessmen in the area closing their stores and scampering for safety.
Policemen have been called upon to restore peace. Security operatives in the area also sustained injuries while attempting to calm the fighters down.
All efforts to reach the Abuja police to confirm this report has proved abortive.
Just a few days back, a violent incident which occurred in Lagos Island, Lagos led to the death of four people including a politician. The tragic incident happened as a result of a riot that broke out after a political rally held by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos.

The movie, is an upcoming 2014 Nigerian dark psychological thriller film written by Tunde Babalola, produced and directed by Kunle Afolayan.

The Bayelsa State government on Sunday announced that a World Fashion Organisation (WFO) has named the proposed World Fashion University which is to be built in state after President Goodluck Jonathan.

Daniel Iworiso-Markson, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seriake Dickson, who made this known in a statement issued in Yenagoa, the state capital said, the decision was in recognition of the president’s achievements so far despite the security challenges facing the country.

After being arrested the father of a woman who was stoned to death and four other suspects pleaded not guilty. The police investigator, Mian Zulfiqar, said, "We have a strong case against the suspects but it is up to the court how to take view of our investigation."

Man Bags 14 Years Jail Term Over N220, 000

A Federal High Court in Kano on Wednesday, 2 July, 2014 sentenced a young man named, Stephen Onyekachi to 14 years impriso
PMNEWS reports that the accused was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, 0n 6 June, 2013, on a 3-count charge of allegedly obtaining the sum of N220, 000 from one Auwal Shehu Garba under the pretext that he had a solar indicator for sale.
It was gathered that Onyekachi approached the complainant through a phone call and offered him a business deal after which Garba allegedly made a payment of N200, 000 and also sent him MTN recharge card worth N20,000.

After listening to counsel of the defendant and the prosecutor, Justice Riman sentenced the accused to seven years imprisonment on counts one and three while count two was dismissed for lack of documentary evidence.

The judge also ordered Onyekachi to pay the sum of N220, 000 in restitution to the victim.

Rename Nigeria To 'Airegin' To Wash Off Colonial Legacy - Confab Delegate

A National Confab, Chief Mike Ozekhome, yesterday, July 3, suggested to change the name Nigeria to ‘Airegin’ because the present name of the country was twisted by the colonialists and a new one would make a clean brake from the past.
During a debate on report of committee on Political Restructuring and Forms of Government with Gen. Ike Nwachukwu and Mohammed Umara Kumalia, the co-Chairmen of the committee, Ozekhome also proposed to change the present National Anthem to the former and older one which was written by Taiwo Akinwumi.
He also suggested the old flag that was designed with the rising sun on it to be re-introduced against the backdrop that it was peculiar with all parts of the country.
According to him, with all these changes, Nigeria would wash off the colonial legacy. "I want to move that this conference should consider changing the name of the country to reflect our originality. The name Nigeria was a colonial imposition which must be corrected. The name was given to the country by Lady Flora Shaw who later became Lady Lugard."
"The country was known formally as the Southern and Northern Protectorates before the name change. It was changed because they said it was too long for them to pronounce. I suggested that the name should be changed from Nigeria to Airegin. It was just gotten when you write the name Nigeria from ‘Right to Left’."
Ozekhome wan’t the first one who suggested to change the name of the country. Earlier, another delegate of the ongoing National Conference, Dr Agwu Ukiwe Okali, suggested to change the name of the country from Nigeria to ‘Naijiria’ in order to spare the country further "setbacks and embarrassment" in the international arena.

Ozekhome also supported the idea of the additional state given to the South East geo-political zone, saying that it will integrate the zone into the system.

Nigerian soldiers got angry and began to destroy BRT buses along Ikorodu Road in Lagos as one of the buses hit and killed another soldier this morning, July 4.
According to witnesses, the soldier who was not identified was riding a bicycle to work when the BRT bus knocked him down at the Palmgrove bus stop.
It was gathered that an alert was sent immediately to other soldiers at the Abalti Barrack. Thus, the road at Palmgrove was blocked by the soldiers as they began to vandalise every BRT in sight, causing a massive traffic.
The drivers abandoned their buses as angry soldiers began setting the buses on fire. Not less than four buses have been burnt down.
It was gathered that journalists who attempted to take photos was severely beaten by the soldiers and had to be rushed to the hospital. Some other pedestrians who were making calls with their phones or even just holding the phone in sight were slapped and kicked and their phones seized or damaged.
According to sources, at least 80 soldiers were on the road between Onipanu and Palmgrove and pedestrians were required to raise their two hands as they passed to avoid beating by the soldiers.

Kirby stated that flights are now being conducted on an intermittent basis as other nations have increased their support and additional intelligence has been gathered.

Muslims in Cameroon are observing Ramadan in the face of serious price hikes for food due to border closures meant to protect against attacks from the Nigerian militant group, Boko Haram, according to Voice of America report.
It was gathered that Nigeria supplies up to 80% of food in North Cameroon.
According to the report, in the border town of Amchide, the normal bustling trade with Nigerian businesses is at a standstill.
Quoting a local Imam, Ibrahim Ahmadou, it was stated that Cameroon soldiers closed their border with Nigeria just ahead of the start of the Ramadan as a security measure against Boko Haram militants.
It could be recalled that the Nigerian terrorists have been plaguing some parts of Cameroon in recent months with theft, kidnappings, gun running and attacks.

According to the Imam, the problem for his village is Nigeria is the main source of food and traders are nervous.
"Eighty percent of our rice is imported. It is very risky for a businessman to carry [import] rice knowing that there is going to be a problem. Even maize (corn), we also have oil, we have sugar, in fact all the food that Muslims need during the month of Ramadan there is a problem because of this barbaric act of Boko Haram, most businessmen do not want to come in," said Ahmadou.
Amchide shoe vendor Halirou Kakoy told news reporter that some food stuffs are no longer available and others, like sugar, now sell for 50% higher than before.
Nine out of 10 people in Amchide make their money through trade, so the border closure and ensuring inflation has hit household incomes hard. Soumou Bakari said he used to make about $200 a day, but now he barely ekes out $50.
He said he’s had to cut food money during Ramadan from $10 to $2 and his family is struggling.
Some of the residents in the village stated that the scarcity and increased prices of food have impacted their holy obligation to share food with the underprivileged during Ramadan.

But Ahmadou said Muslims here can forgo certain obligations during this hardship.  And, he said, many may skip the requirement to fast during daylight hours if it is affecting their health.
"According to Islamic law, they can stop fasting if the prices are so high in such a way that they cannot be able to afford those basic needs during the month of the Ramadan. After that, if the price drops, they can now fast," said Ahmadou.
Responding to the matter, Cameroon’s Minister of Trade Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana told VOA that the government plans to assist the north during Ramadan.
He said the government is discussing ways to make available basic commodities including corn, rice, fish, palm oil, and flour.
Both Nigerian and Cameroonian governments are actively fighting Boko Haram, but the militants appear to be intensifying their 5-year old insurgency and remain a threat for the two nations.

Boko Haram insurgents were reported to have attacked some villages in northern Cameroon recently a situation that forced the Cameroonian government to deploy troops to their border with Nigeria.
Both countries were reported to have met last month to discuss ways to curb the incursions of the militants group.
The United Nations, UN, few days ago blacklisted the leader of Boko Haram sect, Abubakar Shekau.
According to Reuters, Shekau is the first entity to be so sanctioned since the Islamist militant group was blacklisted.
Following the sanction, the Boko haram leader was banned from international travel while their assets would be frozen under the UN al Qaeda sanctions list.
