The city of Port Harcourt will come alive on March 22, 2014, when Paul Okoye, one-half of music duo, P-Square, performs the traditional wedding rites for his partner of some years, Anita Isama.
The wedding which promises to be an affair attended by the crème of Nigeria’s entertainment industry will hold at the Aztech Event Centre, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where the bride and her family hail from.
Isama, the mother of Okoye’s three-year-old son, Andre, is presently busy travelling in and out of the country making plans for the traditional wedding rites. Though the date and venue of the Western wedding is yet to be known, sources say the venue might be Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.

It will be recalled that Peter Okoye (the other twin) and Lola Omotayo had their own traditional wedding last November and the twins have set April as the month for the Western wedding.

Obama Sends Delegation To Abuja For Nigeria’s Centenary

US President Barack Obama has designated State Counsellor Thomas Shannon as the leader of a presidential delegation to Nigeria’s centenary in Abuja.
A statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday by the State Department said Shannon would meet with government officials and participate in high-level activities with other world leaders during the centenary.
The U.S official, who is expected to deliver a message from Obama to Nigeria, would also travel to Lagos for discussions on a range of issues of mutual interest and interact with Nigerian youths.
Meanwhile, Didier Burkhalter, President of the Swiss Confederation, has sent a letter of congratulations to President Goodluck Jonathan on the nation’s centenary.
Burkhalter would be represented at the celebrations by the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Hans-Rudolf Hodel.
“May the ties of confidence and friendship which so happily exist between our two countries continue to flourish in the coming centenary’’, the Swiss president wrote.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a major highlight of the week-long activities include an international conference on peace and security in Africa on Thursday to be attended by several world leaders.
The British colonial authorities had on Jan. 1, 1914 amalgamated what were then the separate protectorates of Southern Nigeria and Northern Nigeria.
The amalgamation gave birth to the single geo-political entity known as Nigeria.
According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, no fewer than 28 world leaders have indicated their interest to attend the celebrations in Abuja.
The celebrations will also feature the conferment of honours on 100 Nigerians, with about 40 per cent of the awards to be presented posthumously.

Omotola Jalade, Genevieve Nanji Lead Pack Of Worn-Out Actors In Nollywood

Omotola
Last year, controversy broke out about Mercy Johnson being the highest paid actress in Nollywood at the moment. She charges between N1.8 to N2m Marketers and producers alike cried out aloud that she be banned.
In a reply, Mercy Johnson said her fee isn't for every movie producer. So if you simply can't afford her, then you move onto who you can afford.

But seriously, some old faces who helped build Nollywood to what it is today are gradually fading.

Should this be so? Afterall, we watch foreign movies and see that their actors are not easily done away with, and that's because they have high budget movies and equally get support both from government and private bodies. So it's easy to pay their A-list actors no matter how high their charges are, and producers and marketers can be sure to recoup their money back once the movies first hit cinemas before being out on CD and  DVD.

But the above isn't so in Nollywood. That's why we find that most of our favourite faces have faded so quickly, and they are left to find out other ways of survival like going into business, scouting for deals with corporate bodies and so on.

Besides, aside the fact that Nollywood can no longer pay their high fees being the reason why they get dumped, reports reveal that people are tired of seeing old and recycled faces in almost all the movies, hence, the continual scouting for fresh blood with less charges.

According to a movie marketer, he argued that the likes of Omotola Jalade and Genevieve Nnaji are no longer hot. "They are both worn out", he said. He explained that although they are still movie stars any day any time and are making their money from different deals and businesses however, when it comes to movies, their market value has dropped drastically. That's why you'll notice that in the last two-three years, both actresses have not been featured in any movie, no thanks to their high price tags. "We want to recoup our investment and make money", he said.

Genevieve and Omotola charge between N2m and N1.6, almost same as Mercy. But why are both not in high demand like Mercy?

Stake holders have argued that although Omosexy and Genny are good actresses however, they are not as versatile as Mercy.

While Omosexy and Genny get restricted movie scripts to play either runs babes, rich girls, love movies, Mercy fits into any character you could ever imagine- from a diva, runs girl, villager, corporate chick, mother, grandmother, villain, hero, name it- that's why she's still in business.

The likes of Stephannie Okereke, Stella Damasus, Rita Dominic, Joke Silver, Oge Okoye, Monalisa Chinda, Ramsey Noah, Jim Iyke, Desmond Elliot and Pete Edochie can be rolled up into one category. They too are stereotyped in movies. They are said not to be versatile enough for producers to still chase after them. So it's easy to forget them immediately new and exciting faces make debut.

So what's the saving grace for these already rejected actors?

It's best if they want to stay relevant in the movie circle to go into producing their own movies just like Uche Jumbo, Desmond Elliot, Kunle Afolayan, Funke Akindele, Rita Dominic and others. That way, they can play lead characters and still be seen. But of course, what that means is that they get to feature in less movies, get more money if their movie make high sales and run at losses whenever their work don't do well in the market.

And they can always make investment into other businesses from money they made from their vibrant days- that's if some of them were wise enough to have known that before the down-turn.

Nigerian actors meet Jonathan with requests  print

Published on February 19, 2014 by michy Members of Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN on Tuesday asked President Goodluck Jonathan to sack of chief executives of the Nigeria Film Corporation and National Film and Video Censors Board.
Ibinabo Fiberesima, President, AGN made the request when members of the Guild paid a solidarity visit to President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The President of AGN said only those with passion for the entertainment industry should be appointed to head the regulatory agencies.
“Mr. President, Your Nollywood is in dire need of purposeful, practical, dynamic and experienced leadership at the helm of affairs of the two regulatory agencies whose function border on our industry, that is, the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC) and the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB).

“Those that have been appointed to run those agencies have shown lack of capacity to put the industry on the path of growth especially in this transformational period.
“We implore Mr. President to review those appointments and appoint administrators with passion, zeal and total dedication to the development of the film Industry, said the AGN President.
Ibinabo added that while Nollywood, the Nigeria film industry has been acknowledged as capable of employing over five million people, it is in dire need of a modern, responsive legal environment for it to continue to thrive and remain relevant to this administration’s transformation agenda.
“The present Copyright Act is now grossly inadequate particularly in digital and Internet environment.
“The criminal sanctions for piracy and other copyright infringements have become ridiculously low and no longer as sufficient deterrence to infringers,” said Ibinabo.
The AGN President specifically asked the the President to ensure the full implementation of the revised National Film Policy (NFP) and to present the bill on the setting up of the Motion Picture Practitioners Council of Nigeria (MOPPICON) as an Executive bill to the National Assembly to be speedily be passed into law.
“We believe that that the implementation of the revised national film policy which provides among other things for the setting up of community cinemas in each of the local government area of the country, the setting up of MOPPICCON and the setting up of a sustainable film fund, is the most important intervention tool that the Nigerian motion picture industry requires to address some of its structural deficiencies” she said.
The guild also, requested for a land and a building in the Federal Capital Territory for their headquarters which will be named The Goodluck Jonathan Screen Actors House.
The guild also urged the President to direct the relevant agencies to negotiate and sign the foreign treaty with other country as currently non exists with any country as well as inculcate them into the centenary celebrations so that they can “produce a historic film that will talk about us from 1914-2014 with a view to chronicle the achievements of our founding fathers and socio political evolution”.
President Jonathan told the AGN members that he will to look into their requests. The President said while allocation of land to the Guild can be guaranteed, he would meet with the FCT minister to help them build the secretariat.
Labaran Maku, the Information Minister who accompanied members of the Guild to the Presidential Villa promised that their request that needed executive assent will be presented to the Federal Executive Council next week.
Edem Duke, the Minister of Culture and Tourism, also appealed to the guild to portray the positive value of the country as well as the unity of the country in all their stories.

New Three-Minute Amazing Spider-Man 2 Trailer Lands
Here comes the dubstepper

24 February 2014  |  Written by Ali Plumb

There have been many trailers for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. This, the latest, is a whole three minutes long, and though it features plenty of footage we've already seen, it also has a decent chunk of new Spidey goodness. Pin back your earholes and prepare for a new dose of arachnid dubsteppery.
It's very much from Jamie Foxx's chief bad guy Electro's perspective, with plenty of spooky monologuing going on, but there's still a few humour beats to enjoy, in particular between Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) and Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield). As there's so much on show here, fingers crossed there'll be a lot of surprises still in store for cinemagoers when it's finally released.
The plot goes a little something like this: Peter is still balancing acts of heroism with romancing Gwen and trying to live up to his Uncle Ben’s (Martin Sheen) credo about great power and great responsibility. Oh, and he doesn't want to make his Aunt May (Sally Field) worry too much. Three villains have been revealed - Electro, Paul Giamatti's Rhino and Dane DeHaan's Harry Osborne (and, it seems from the trailer, Green Goblin) - all of whom want to squish Andrew Garfield's red and blue hero like a, um, bug.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits cinemas on April 18, 2014, with two more instalments planned for May 2016 and May 2018.

THE HISTORY OF VALENTINES DAY
the history of Valentine's Day--and the story of its patron saint--is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl--possibly his jailor's daughter--who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed "From your Valentine," an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and--most importantly--romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France.
Origins of Valentine's Day: A Pagan Festival in February

While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial--which probably occurred around A.D. 270--others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to "Christianize" the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.

To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. They would then strip the goat's hide into strips, dip them into the sacrificial blood and take to the streets, gently slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city's bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage.
Valentine's Day: A Day of Romance

Lupercalia survived the initial rise of Christianity and but was outlawed—as it was deemed “un-Christian”--at the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine's Day. It was not until much later, however, that the day became definitively associated with love. During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds' mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine's Day should be a day for romance.

Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages, though written Valentine's didn't begin to appear until after 1400. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. (The greeting is now part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England.) Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois.
Typical Valentine's Day Greetings

In addition to the United States, Valentine's Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Australia. In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine's Day greetings.

Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentines in America. Howland, known as the “Mother of the Valentine,” made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as "scrap." Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine's Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.) Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines.....................................................@MICHELISWORLD.BLOGSPOT.COM
